For nine-year-old Sam, last month’s Manchester derby in the EFL Cup will live long in the memory as he stepped out with his heroes at Old Trafford as a matchday mascot.
The United fan has type 1 diabetes and his day-to-day life can be affected with the taking of medication and the monitoring of diet and activity.
To give him a lift, the Manchester United Foundation were contacted about the possibility about him being a mascot and the family were delighted when he was selected for the match against Manchester City.
“I still love playing football; it can’t ever stop me,” Sam told mufoundation.org. “Meeting my football heroes felt great; it’s the best thing I’ve ever done.”
Sam’s story is part of the club’s #UnitedandMe social media campaign, which focuses on hope young people from various projects have been helped by the Manchester United Foundation.
