Rafa Benitez is set to rest several players when Newcastle United take on Championship rivals Preston North End in the fourth round of the EFL Cup.
The former Liverpool and Real Madrid manager has not been averse to shuffling his squad this season as he attempts to lead the Magpies back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.Newcastle are at the top of the Championship table following their recent victories against Barnsley and Ipswich Town, and they are 1/8 to be promoted this term.
They are 15/2 to beat Simon Grayson’s Preston side 2-1 on Tuesday with the former Crystal Palace forward Dwight Gayle 4/5 to score at any time in the EFL Cup clash at St James’ Park.
Benitez said: “For me, it doesn’t matter about your position in the table – we could be in the middle of the table and still I would be approaching this game trying to win – so we will try to win.
“We will do it in the way that we are doing now, using different players for different games, because we want to be sure that we have fresh legs.
“We will be a strong team, but with different players and the same idea – just try to win this one – and try to win on Saturday against them again.”
Preston will be no pushover as they are unbeaten in seven games in all competitions.
