Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp expects his players to “stay cool” amid talk of a Premier League title challenge after hitting top spot on Sunday.
It is the first time Liverpool have been at the Premier League summit since May 2014 when they lead the title race going into the final few weeks of the season, only to slip up and hand the crown to Manchester City.
Klopp believes those players left at Anfield who experienced the anguish of narrowly missing out on winning the Premier League have moved on from that part of their careers, claiming he has created a brand new team.
The German admits the Reds are in the ideal position after 11 league matches but feels it is too early to start talking about title challenges.
“If somebody thinks being one point ahead after 11 match days is a big sign for the rest of the season then I can’t help this person,” Klopp said.
“We stay cool. It’s the best position I can imagine but nothing else has happened.
“There’s no pressure after 11 match days, absolutely no pressure. We saw Chelsea [on Saturday], quite impressive, [Manchester] City playing Barcelona, quite impressive. Man United – never write them off, Tottenham [are a] good side. There’s a lot of really good teams around.
“You can play a really good season and you could be fifth or sixth and nobody would be really happy. So, stay cool, take the things like they are, play your best, win games, that’s the only thing we can do.”
Liverpool return to action after the international break with a trip to Southampton, a game they are 11/10 to win, while the home side are 9/4 and the draw is 5/2.
