Stan Wawrinka is determined to beat Andy Murray on Friday and enhance his chances of reaching the semi-finals of the ATP World Tour Finals. The Swiss star, who is seeded third for the tournament, saw off Marin Cilic 7-6 7-6 to keep alive his chances of qualifying for the last four in London.
Wawrinka had to save one set point in the first set at 5-4 and had his serve broken in the first game of the second set, but was ultimately too strong for the Croatian.
“It was a great match,” said Wawrinka. “I’m really happy with the way I played in general.
“All I know is if I want to have a chance to qualify, I need to win against Andy. That’s all I’m trying to do. I’m going to try to play my best tennis, to beat the world number one.”
Murray has won nine of his 16 encounters with Wawrinka and, in their only meeting this year, beat the Swiss player in the semi-finals of the French Open.
Cilic was also beaten by Murray in London and will face Kei Nishikori in his final group match on Friday.
Murray is 1/4 to beat Wawrinka while Nishikori is 4/7 to triumph against Cilic. Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic is 6/5 to win the ATP World Tour Finals outright.
