The 40-year-old has been drafted in by Los Verdiblancos after they decided to end the tenure of Gus Poyet after a matter of months. Former Deportivo La Coruna coach Victor Sanchez is keen to bring fans and players back together after taking charge at Real Betis. And Sanchez, who was sacked by Greek side Olympiacos earlier this season after they failed to reach the Champions League group stage, is keen to make his mark as quickly as possible and help Betis climb away from the threat of a relegation battle.
He told the club’s official website: “I come to Real Betis with tremendous hope and all the motivation in the world to excite one of the biggest fan bases in the country.
“The union between the team and Betis supporters is essential, as Betis have proved throughout their history.”
Sanchez has also pledged to reassess the role played by veteran striker Ruben Castro, who had been utilised on the left wing and then dropped altogether by Poyet.
He added: “When Ruben and I were at Depor, we called him ‘El Pistolas’ because he could shoot quicker than Billy the Kid.
“He didn’t get the minutes he needed, but he’s gone on to become what he is today at Betis. He’s very important to us for his experience and talent.”
Betis are currently priced at 13/2 to be relegated from La Liga this season, with Leganes 11/4 and Alaves 4/1.
