Conor McGregor Is Back! He’s the UFC’s biggest pay-per-view draw in history, he’s headlined five out of the six highest-selling UFC PPV events and now he’s back for a potentially explosive rematch against Dustin Poirier.
UFC 257: Poirier vs. McGregor 2 is an upcoming mixed martial arts event produced by the Ultimate Fighting Championship that will take place on January 24, 2021 at the Etihad Arena on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
The Irishman’s background in the company is a colourful one; he first became a UFC champion in 2015, he’s announced his retirement from the sport three times and he’s never actually defended a title, but no matter what happens he still always manages to draw the big numbers. He arguably has it all, the strut, the looks, the swagger, the chat; he’s also the only UFC fighter with a KO victory across three different weight classes, to put it simply, he’s the man.His rematch with Poirier looks to be a stepping-stone to title glory (again) – when they last met in 2014 the fight lasted 106 seconds with Notorious TKO’ing Poirier – this time Mystic Mac has predicted a sub-60 second KO, which would mean back-to-back first minute KO’s for McGregor.
Ominously, McGregor’s coach has been quoted saying “”He never stopped putting the hours in. He’s a much scarier beast now because he’s been training solidly for a year. He’s been wanting to fight, he hasn’t been able to, and now we get to let him off the leash.”
Poirier isn’t exactly a pushover, he’s the #2 ranked lightweight and #7 in the P4P rankings, holding wins against Alvarez, Gaethje, Pettis and Holloway (twice) on his CV with two of his last three losses coming at the hands of Khabib and McGregor. Surely he will want to exact revenge for that first round loss?! Surely he will want to give a better account of himself this time?
An interesting sub-plot to this is that Khabib Nurmagomedov is also currently *still* on Fight Island, what are the chances that McGregor fulfils his promise of a 60 second KO for Khabib to then turn up in the ring for potential fireworks afterwards – this is one fight that you absolutely need to see.
Dan Hooker vs Michael Chandler is the co-main event on the card that also looks like a potential blockbuster – Chandler comes to the UFC from Bellator where he was a three-time lightweight champion, he enters an already stacked 155lb division but has already spoke about fights with Khabib and McGregor, endearing him to the fans already.
If Chandler wins, and wins impressively, do not be surprised to see him pitched in with the winner of the fight following his or even a showdown with the one of the greatest of all-time, the Eagle, Khabib Nurmagomedov. You can almost hear Dana White screaming in anticipation for what the future holds in the Lightweight division!
Roll on Bruce Buffer… “IT’S TIMMMMMMMEEEEEEEE”
