If it’s not broken don’t fix it. That could be the policy that Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane is taking with his current crop of ‘Galacticos’. That, and where else could they realistically improved their squad?
There’s no such thing as perfect, especially in football. But in terms of squad chemistry, age and squad depth, Real Madrid’s squad isn’t far off. With the exception of Cristiano Ronaldo, who can only really be replaced with Barcelona’s Lionel Messi in terms of ability, every player in Madrid’s squad can be replaced with a substitute and it wouldn’t mean a huge difference in quality. Ramos or Pepe gets injured then Varane comes in, Modric or Kroos is unavailable they can use Casemiro or Kovacic. If Bale’s out, James Rodriguez or Isco can play, and as of this upcoming La Liga season, Benzema will face stiff competition from former Juventus hot-shot Alvaro Morata, who re-joins Madrid following a loan spell at the Italian champion’s.
Player age also plays a huge factor as to why Real Madrid don’t need to sign any more players. It’s as if in every position on the pitch Zidane can pair a world-class ‘experienced’ player, with a player who is in their physical prime (early to mid-twenties). Thus, giving his squad the perfect balance in terms of experience and knowledge and physical conditioning. For Example, Marcelo, aged 28, is coupled with Caravajal who is 24. Luka Modric, aged 30, plays central midfield with Germany player maker, Toni Kroos, 26. In the forward positions, the legendary Cristiano Ronaldo is now 31 years old and his opposite winger, Gareth Bale has just turned 27 years old.
There were, however, a couple of star names in which Zinedine Zidane was interested in but allegedly missed out on. One of them being the world’s most expensive signing and new Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba. Throughout the summer there were strong claims that Real Madrid were interested in bringing the France international to the Bernabeu, but were in unusual fashion priced of a move due to Juventus’ world record demands.
Whether Pogba would improve a central midfield duo of Modric and Kroos is subject for debate, but that fact that Zidane was said to have been keen to bring his fellow countryman to Madrid would suggest that he does in fact feel the Madrid needed a signing or two. Also concerning Manchester United, Real Madrid’s longing for Spain international David De Gea came about again this summer. With De Gea’s move to Madrid collapsing literally at the last minute in the summer of 2015 as well as the goalkeeper signing a new long-term contract in the process, it seemed that Madrid’s chances of signing the united keeper has now vanished, for a couple of years at least. /leaguelane.com
