Bale hurt by Bernabeu boos. Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale has claimed that booing from the club’s fans has knocked his confidence.
Welsh winger Bale impressed at Tottenham for six seasons before moving to Real Madrid for a then world record fee of £85.3 million at the start of the 2013/14 season.
Bale managed 22 goals in 44 appearances across all competitions for Madrid in his first season and has won the 2016/17 La Liga title, the 2013/14 Copa del Rey and four Champions League titles since his move to the Santiago Bernabeu.
The 30-year-old was even named man of the match after scoring a stunning overhead kick in the 2017/18 Champions League final but it has not been plain sailing for Bale in the Spanish capital.
Since his transfer in 2013, the former Southampton man has been the subject to booing from Real Madrid supporters – something he says he struggles to fathom.
He notably came under fire back in November, when unveiling a banner which read ‘Wales. Golf. Madrid. In that order’ following Wales’ qualification for Euro 2020.
And Bale has claimed that the taunting from Madrid supporters has not done his confidence any good.
Speaking on the golf podcast ‘The Erik Anders Lang Show’, he said: “We get a lot of pressure every game. If you don’t play well, there’s scrutiny.
“I’ve had 80,000 people in a stadium whistle at me because I haven’t played well. I’ve had it a few times. It’s not nice and it doesn’t do your confidence any good either.
“You think to yourself that you’re playing well, you just haven’t scored or assisted. But people just like goals, assists and ‘wow’ things. Sometimes that doesn’t always happen.”
