England manager Roy Hodgson has rubbished suggestions that Wayne Rooney should not go to the European Championship this summer. The Manchester United striker has missed his club’s last six games with a knee injury but was criticised for poor form over a number of weeks prior to his enforced absence.
Some critics have even suggested the England captain should sit out the Euros in France, but Hodgson says the only way this would happen is if he remains injured.
“He is our captain, he is our most experienced player,” Hodgson told talkSPORT. “He’s not missed one squad of the last eight squads and he has never let us down.I’m not prepared to say categorically about any players at this stage that they will go, but I certainly will dismiss any discussions about Wayne Rooney and whether or not he should go.
“My only fear is that he won’t recover in time from his injury, but it’s a minor fear.”
The Manchester Evening News have photographed Rooney for the first time without his protective knee brace this week.
Rooney is expected to return to action for United, who are three points short of the Premier League top four, in April.
