American Andre Ward feels victory over Sergey Kovalev in their light-heavyweight clash in Las Vegas on Saturday would help him create a legacy. Ward is unbeaten and has made the step up from super-middleweight to take on the dangerous Russian, who has managed 30 victories, 26 of which came by knockout, and one draw.
The 32-year-old has victories over the likes of Carl Froch and Arthur Abraham on his CV, but Ward feels a win over Kovalev would eclipse his previous achievements.
“Just looking at the era of Sugar Ray Leonard, Tommy Hearns, Marvin Hagler – those guys fought each other. And Roberto Duran, they put reputations, they put records, they put all those things on the line, just saying that ‘I’m better than you’; and none of those fights were easy for any of those guys,” he said, as reported by Sky Sports.
“They did their part to etch themselves in boxing history where guys like myself have watched them growing up, and I want to do my part to do the same.”
Ward is 8/11 to win the fight or 11/10 to secure a victory by decision or technical decision, while Kovalev is 11/10 to come out on top.
The fight will take place in the early hours of Sunday morning for boxing fans watching the action from the UK.
