Max Verstappen has had an impressive 2016 season but says he is ignoring the hype surrounding him and is concentrating on performances. The Formula 1 season comes to its conclusion in Abu Dhabi at the end of November with either Lewis Hamilton or Nico Rosberg taking the drivers’ title.
It’s important to stay with two feet on the ground – not only try, just do it. Max Verstappen
However, while the focus is on the Mercedes duo, Verstappen will be able to look back on a successful second season in F1.
The Red Bull driver won the Spanish Grand Prix, his first victory and goes to Abu Dhabi in fifth place, still with a chance of overtaking Sebastian Vettel in fourth.
That victory in Spain made him the youngest ever race winner and, apart from the rivalry between Hamilton and Rosberg, his development has been one of the stories of 2016.
However, the Dutch driver wants to keep on ignoring the headlines and focusing purely on what happens on the track.
He told a Facebook interview: “I’m very happy with the results I’ve had especially the very special moment in Barcelona where the first time on the podium I was on the top step.
“That was definitely something I really enjoyed.
“It is of course very nice that people say those things, but for me the most important thing is just to focus on myself and stay very neutral on all those comments. Always try to improve yourself and to fly high.
“It’s important to stay with two feet on the ground – not only try, just do it.”
Part of the hype focuses on the possibility of him becoming the youngest ever world champion. Sebastian Vettel holds that record, winning it when he was 23, but Versatappen says that is not even in his thoughts at the moment.
Rosberg is 9/4 to win the final race of the season, in Abu Dhabi while Hamilton is 8/13.
The German has a 12-point lead over Hamilton so a place in the top three at Yas Marina guarantees him the title. He is 1/5 to win the drivers’ championship with the British driver priced at 10/3.
