Milos Raonic will have to beat Dominic Thiem if he is to qualify for the semi-finals of the ATP World Tour Finals after losing to Novak Djokovic on Tuesday. Djokovic became the first player to reach the last four in London after seeing off the Canadian’s challenge in a tight match 7-6 7-6.
If Djokovic goes on to win the title, he will regain the world number one spot from Andy Murray, while he is aiming to win the season-ending tournament for the fifth year in a row and the sixth time overall.
Raonic, who was beaten by Murray in the Wimbledon final four months ago, served well against Djokovic but was ultimately undone in two tie-breaks.
He said afterwards: “I believe all the break points, except for maybe the set point at the end, he put in a first serve every single time. I believe when he had his break points, I didn’t put in one. I think it’s those little things that make a difference.
“I just maybe hesitated a little bit too much. But overall I created a lot of opportunities. I did a lot of good things. A lot of things to be proud of.”
Raonic, who beat Gael Monfils in his first group match on Sunday, is 2/5 to beat Thiem, who is available at 2/1 to come out on top.
