The Barcelona defender is something of a divisive figure with Spanish supporters owing to his support for Catalan independence.
He became embroiled in his latest storm during Sunday’s 2-0 win over Albania when he cut the sleeves off his jersey, angering some fans in the process.
Pique, along with fellow defender and Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos, were sporting long-sleeved shirts that did not feature the Spain flag trim found on the short-sleeved version.
The Spanish Football Federation issued a statement confirming that Pique, like many before him, had cut the sleeves off for comfort but it did not stop the player getting abuse on social media.
The former Manchester United youngster has now confirmed that the fans treatment of him has taken away his love of playing for Spain and he is set to quit after the next World Cup.
“I have tried everything, but I can’t bear this anymore,” he said. “Today’s issue of the sleeves is the straw that breaks the camel.
“They’ve managed to make me lose the excitement of coming here and although after Russia I’ll only be 31, I’ll leave.”
Spain drew 1-1 with Italy in Turin in their first game of this international break and are now 2/5 to win Group G. The Azzurri, level on seven points with Spain after three games, are 15/8 while Albania are 100/1 having won two of their first three games.
Pique has won the Champions League three times with Barcelona and has 84 Spanish caps. He has already won the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012 in a glittering international career.
