Andy Murray is aiming to stay at the top of the world rankings for a long time after confirming his dominance of world tennis by beating Novak Djokovic on Sunday. The 29-year-old Scot brushed aside the Serb, who he usurped as the world number one earlier in the month, 6-3 6-4 in the final of the ATP World Tour Finals in London.
Murray has been superb in the last few weeks and has now won 24 matches in a row with Sunday’s triumph being his ninth title of the year.
“I would like to try and stay there, obviously. It’s taken a huge effort the last five, six months to get there,” said Murray.
“I’m aware that’s going to be extremely difficult though because I had a great year this year. I only managed to do it by one match. To repeat that again next year is going to be extremely difficult.”
Murray, who clinched a second Wimbledon title in July before winning Olympic gold in Rio, added: “I’m not going to be able to play at this level and play this many matches into my mid-30s. The young guys are going to keep improving and getting better.”
Djokovic had won the ATP World Tour Finals title for the last four years and has often held the upperhand against Murray but he has struggled in the second half of the year, since his Wimbledon exit five months ago.
After a short break, Murray will fly to Miami in a fortnight to begin winter training before the Australian Open gets underway in January.
Murray is 6/4 to win in Melbourne and claim his first Australian Open title, while Djokovic can be backed at 6/4, Milos Raonic at 20/1 and Stanislas Wawrinka at 11/1.
