Krosche lauds brilliant Leipzig. Markus Krosche hailed RB Leipzig as they got their Bundesliga title bid back on track with a Timo Werner-inspired 5-0 demolition of Mainz at the Opel Arena on Sunday.

Leipzig were wasteful in a 1-1 draw with Freiburg last weekend. But were excellence against Mainz as Werner ended his goalless run with a sublime hat-trick.

Julian Nagelsmann’s team went into the fixture ten points adrift of table-topping Bayern Munich but trimmed the gap to seven points with a dominant victory.

Die Bullen were in irresistible form on the Rhine, Werner putting them ahead after just 11 minutes. And they went 2-0 up when Yussuf Poulsen doubled the lead after 23 minutes.

Austrian ace Marcel Sabitzer finished smartly in the 36th minute to hand Leipzig a three-goal lead heading into half-time and there was no coming back for the hosts when Werner doubled his tally soon after the break.

The speedy striker had failed to score in any of his last four matches in all competitions but ended his barren run in fine style, completing his hat-trick with 15 minutes remaining.

Mainz applied late pressure but failed to force a consolation as Leipzig reduced the gap to Bayern to seven points.

Speaking afterwards, Leipzig Sporting Director Krosche was delighted with the clinical display.

 “We created lots of chances again, and this time we converted them,” he said. “So we can be very happy. It was a great game.”

Earlier in the day, Schalke’s poor run continued when they were beaten 3-0 at home by Augsburg thanks to goals from Eduard Lowen, Noah Sarenren Bazee and Sergio Cordova.

The Royal Blues have failed to win any of their last nine Bundesliga matches and are now two points behind sixth-placed Wolfsburg in the battle for European football.

Speaking afterwards, boss David Wagner was brutally honest about his team’s shortcomings, telling reporters: “We develop too few goals and do not take advantage of our few chances. We score too few goals and make too many individual mistakes.”

Schalke will hope to bounce back when they face Fortuna Dusseldorf on Wednesday.
