The 35-year-old Sao Paulo-born driver is gearing up for his penultimate race in the sport after a 16-year career and is hopeful of having something to cheer in front of his home supporters at Interlagos this Sunday. I have won twice at there, and have finished on the podium many times over the years and I hope we can get another one. Massa has enjoyed a good record in Brazil with wins in 2006 and 2008 while with Ferrari, secured a podium finish in 2007 and 2012 also with the Scuderia, and in 2014 with current team Williams.
And, while it will be a very difficut ask to claim a 12th race win of his F1 career, he is hoping to at least snatch a top-three podium spot.
Massa said: “Interlagos is home. It’s the place where I grew up. It will be emotional racing there for the final time on such an amazing track.
“I’m looking forward to enjoying every single lap and hopefully I can manage to finish the race with a good result.”
Massa, who narrowly missed out on the 2008 F1 drivers’ championship at Interlagos in 2008 when then McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton pipped him to the title, added: “I have won twice at there, and have finished on the podium many times over the years and I hope we can get another one. It won’t be easy, but I will do everything I can for my people and for Brazil in my last race at home.”
Massa is 66/1 to secure a podium finish, while championship leader Nico Rosberg is 13/8 to win in Brazil and his Mercedes’ team-mate, Hamilton, is 5/6.
