Koln vs Borussia Dortmund
Date: Friday, 2nd February 2018
Kick-off at 19:30 UK/ 20:30 CET
Venue: RheinEnergieStadion (Cologne).
Peter Stoger left Koln reeling at the foot of the table in December. The team was left with 3 point. The Billy Goats had no wins in their account and were on 3 points from 14 matches. Since he left, things took a U-turn at the RheinEnergieStadion.
The rookie manager Stefan Ruthenbeck guided Koln to a four match unbeaten run since starting on back-to-back losses. The current run produced 3 consecutive wins before the latest stalemate against Augsburg last weekend. So, they have the momentum and it is up to them to make it count in big games like these.
Focus is back to Peter Stoger, since he is the one replaced Peter Bosz at Borussia Dortmund. Things looked good at the beginning when he started the stint with back-to-back wins over Mainz and Hoffenheim. However, they are back to the unimpressive form by drawing all three Bundesliga games in the calendar year 2018.
Consistent injuries has been a problem for Dortmund this season, but this is not as worse as Koln, who still have 9 players in the nursing table. In addition to the shortage of first team players, Stoger need quickly fix the holes in attacking caused by the departure of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Koln vs Dortmund: Head-to-head
Dortmund’s last away win at Koln can be dated back to the 2011/12 season when they bagged a massive 6-1 win, which was also their 4th Bundesliga win at the stadium in a row.
Since then, Koln managed to pull things back at their home turf with a 3 match unbeaten run that saw 2 wins and 1 draw. Interestingly, both teams have scored in 6 of the last 7 meetings between the two sides at the RheinEnergieStadion.
Koln vs Dortmund: Prediction
Koln are still marred with injuries to their key players, but the results in recent weeks is a huge morale boost for the team sitting at the foot of the table. Taking about confidence and morale, Dortmund is a team that lack both at this point as they drew 3 back-to-back games in January and now have to cope with the absence of star striker Aubameyang on a permanent basis.
Signs are not good for the team in yellow and Koln, who has momentum are the most likely candidate to end up with a minimum point on Friday night.
