Basel vs Manchester City
UEFA Champions League
Date: Tuesday, 13th February 2018
Kick-off at 19:45 UK/ 20:45 CET
Venue: St. Jakob-Park (Basel).
Basel face a mammoth task in the Champions League round of 16 tie as their opponent is none other than the free scoring Manchester City.
The Swiss side impressed in the group stages this term and finished second in the group behind Manchester United and above Champions League regulars Benfica and CSKA Moscow. The biggest highlight of their campaign is the 1-0 win over United at the St. Jakob-Park. Meanwhile, beating Benfica 5-0 at home and then 2-0 in the reverse leg can also be considered as significant results.
Meantime, Manchester City qualified from their group with ease by winning their first five games. They did lose to Shakhtar Donetsk on matchday six, but they travelled to Ukraine with a fringe squad.
This is Basel’s third appearance at the Champions League knockout and they are yet to make it past the stage (2012 & 2015).
Meantime, Manchester City are making their fifth appearance at the round of 16. They had lost in 3 of the previous four occasions. The exception was the semifinal appearance in 2015/16, a run halted by eventual title winners Real Madrid.
Basel vs Manchester City: Head-to-head
This is Manchester City’s first meeting with Basel and a Swiss club in UEFA competitions.
Meanwhile, Basel are meeting an English Premier League club for the 29th time and their current record stand at 7 wins, 8 draws and 13 losses. At home, it is 6 wins, 2 draws and 5 losses from 13.
However, Basel enjoyed some success against English clubs at home in recent years. This year, they bagged a surprise 1-0 win against Manchester United in the group stages. They had also beaten Liverpool (2014) and Chelsea (2013) by the same scoreline, before losing to Arsenal (2016) by a 1-4 margin.
Basel vs Manchester City: Prediction
Basel had managed to trouble English clubs at their backyard in the past. But in a nutshell, they are nothing but an inconsistent side.
On the other hand, Manchester City boast of the best win ratio in away games among clubs from elite European league. This stands at 80%, which is 16 wins from 20 matches in all competitions.
Thus, Manchester City to win is a banker, but the odds in the region of 1.39 offer us little value for return. Therefore eyes must be set on HT/FT (2/2) for the visitors, a punt with a good chance of conversion backed up by City’s attacking prowess. This also opens up the chance for this fixture to see 3 or more goals and handicap options in favor of the visiting side.
